The Longue Durée
A cordial Hermetic and political academic
General: Sorin Hildebrand is an Awakened Hermetic and member of the House Tremere faction. Although Octavia Grey is the ranking Hermetic of Toronto, Sorin is the political leader of the Order of Hermes and manages the daily affairs of the Hermetic chantry. Sorin is a prominent figure in both the Awakened community and the academic community at the University of Toronto, and is a personal friend of Dennis Grenville, friendly with Amaterasu Mori and Jocelyn Bell Burnell, acting as Annabel Sinclair’s doctoral advisor, and is supervising Nyx Phaneus in graduate-level research.
Abilities: Sorin has been Awakened for approximately 30 years, during which time he has mostly been involved in the academic community on behalf of House Tremere. An accomplished academic in his own right, with an MA in Political Science from La Sorbonne and a PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science, Sorin has also proven quite adept politically; however, his political attentions often focus upon academics and counter-elites. A Romanian gypsy by birth, Sorin possesses an often surprising knowledge and ability with Eastern Euroepean folk magic for a man of his stature. Sorin has shown his magical abilities to mainly reside in the tracking and interpretation of destiny.
Sorin was born into a large Romanian gypsy family and rose from an obscure birth to secure education through a patron whom was impressed with his bearing and intelligence. He attended La Sorbonne during an era of heightening fascism, but graduated and moved on to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) shortly before the Fall of France to Nazi Germany. Sorin continued his studies at the LSE during the Battle of Britain and beyond, witnessing destruction around him but never directly pulled into it himself. During this time, Sorin also became known to the order of Hermes and House Tremere, and was inducted into the Order.
Since the war, Sorin has involved himself in the study of critical political theory and moved rapidly up in appointments to various faculties, until he was offered a position at the University of Toronto, a position which House Tremere believed to be beneficial to them as well. Sorin quickly settled into life in Toronto and has become a key figure in the academic community and the political leader of the Order of Hermes in the city. His relationship with Dennis Grenville, first as an academic advisor and then as a personal friend, has done much to increase Sorin’s clout in the Sleeper community of Toronto.
